what is oil pulling and how to do it and benefits

Oil Pulling

Heard of it, but not quite sure what it is and how to do it properly? Here is the low down:

In Ayurvedic practices, oil pulling is a method of detoxification recommended to be incorporated into your daily routine. You basically swish your mouth with an oil and allow it to pull out all the toxic waste in your body. Not only is this ancient health method great for removing toxins from the body, it also has many other benefits for your teeth and gum health. It helps to strengthen, tonify and reduce inflammation of your gums and helps to give you beautiful sparking white teeth! Make sure you use cold pressed unrefined oils when oil pulling, like coconut, sesame, or olive oil. My favourite oil to use is coconut oil, because it has anti-microbial and anti-viral benefits as well. I like to do this in the shower, which is where I get a minute to myself and don’t have to talk to anyone!

Oil pulling health benefits at a glance:

  • Releasing bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites from the body
  • Reducing heavy metals in the blood stream
  • Improving the health of gum tissue, including fighting the bacteria that cause gum disease
  • Whitening teeth
  • Encouraging the blood and lymphatic systems to cleanse by stimulating the production of saliva
  • Encouraging the release of toxins from the organs and balances the three ayurvedic doshas (pitta, vata, and kapha)

Method:

i. Clean your mouth first by brushing your teeth and tongue scraping

ii. Take 1 Tbsp of Cold pressed unrefined sesame, olive or coconut oil into your mouth

iii. Swoosh around, without swallowing, for about 20 minutes

iv. Spit out and clean your mouth again (it’s normal for the oil to be a white colour)
